We now live in a world where fashion needs to be updated every time. One influence that boosted high fashion again was the show SEX AND THE CITY. It evolved from the story of Carrie, a writer who came to NYC telling stories about dating and her life with friends. A season or two later, the show transformed into the biggest advertiser of designer brands. From then on, people all over the world got to know again about signature brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Fendi, Prada, Gucci, Dior Etc.
The younger generation from age 15 to 29 became fashion-savvy and designer bags were the in the center of it all. Bags, bags, and more bags. My first designer bag was a Louis Vuitton Monogram Pouchette. It was the time when small bags were in. The next was the Speedy 30, followed by the Trouville Multicolore, the Vernis, and a dozen more. I got a Prada, and a Balenciaga. Then the Givenchy Pandora and Nightingale, became an in thing. Chanels and Hermes followed closely after.
So does one need a signature bag to look fashionable? Not at all. You just need to know what will suit your lifestyle and needs. You shouldn’t break your bank acct just to own a signature bag.
What should one do:
1. Know your lifestyle – If you are an office person, a traveller or a woman in a marketing job, there are different needs for these types of work. An office person only needs a basic black handbag or spacious shoulder bag. You don’t need a bag that is too stylish or colorful. Being in an office job, you have to look conservative. You are not in a fashion business. So the boss would like you to focus more on the job rather than looking good.
2. Find out what you wear everyday – If you are in business attire or office uniform, then all you need are basic colors like black, dark brown or dark blue. Please refrain from carrying loud colors as it contradicts your attire. I know you might think Red is an accent color (yes, it is) but you are not there to attract attention. You are there to work.
3. Know the nature of your activities – If you are a marketing person or one who travels a lot, You need a spacious bag that accommodates documents, pens, calculators, etc. If you are a traveller who goes around to sight see, a small cross-body bag would suffice.
4. Know your budget – Please don’t break your bank acct or accumulate credit card debts just to go with fashion or be like the celebrity you follow on IG. Yes, you might have a dream bag but buy only what you need and what suits your budget. Looking fashionable or stylish does not have to be expensive. There are quality leather goods that are reasonably priced and there are also generic brands.
Remember, it’s the woman who makes the bag. Not the bag who makes the woman.
A woman who is well-mannered and with proper decorum is more attractive than a woman who just owns a designer bag without refinement.
The wanting for the latest designer will never end. The fashion brands wil always want you to buy. It is best to go back to what is appropriate, functional and practical.
