“I deserve this!”
“I can’t wait to eat that whole pint of ice cream once I get home!”
“Do you want to order in? I have A LOT of stuff to do!”
“I need a cookie for this.”
Do these sound familiar to you? I’m with you on this. It really does happen to the best of us and unfortunately, if you keep on stress eating, it might only lead you to get way too stressed even more as this type of behavior adds calories to the body… and we all know how that can be stressful for others.
I am not blaming you if you want to reward yourself with Korean BBQ with friends after a tough week at work. The thing is when this gets out of proportion and you keep at it, you might need to take a step back and reevaluate how you deal with situations such as this. I understand that you need that type of escape or distraction in a sense to make you feel better about the situation you are in.
There are ways to combat this and to avoid only getting stressed by gaining extra pounds. When you are not at your best, ask yourself… do I really want to eat? Determine if you just want to “eat your feelings out” or if you are actually hungry.
Generally, when you want to stress eat your cravings mostly consist of anything sweet, sugary, fatty, and high in calories. On the other hand, if you are truly hungry, you would think that ANY food will fulfill your hunger – as long as it satisfies your need to eat, you’re good.
Another tell-tale sign of emotional eating is eating as if you need more even if you are actually full. When you are just hungry, once you have satisfied your hunger, you feel full. Whereas when you are stressed, you keep on eating more and more – ignoring what your stomach tells you.
Ultimately, it is okay to give in to this from time to time. But the best thing to do is find other ways to deal with your emotions and stress – perhaps reading a book and going for a run outside. This way, you are also being kind to yourself. If all else fails, it’s time to consult an expert on this matter. You got this!
